This has the effect of raising the bottom of the mold off the shelf of the kiln, thus allowing even circulation of heat all around the mold and glass as it is slumping. The “skirt” has cut-out “handles” on each side, to facilitate easy lifting in and out of the kiln, and also to let the heat circulate beneath the mold.
